Help! I can't feel my pelvic floor!

If you're having trouble connecting to your pelvic floor, you're not alone. It's a common challenge to overcome, but it's an integral part of the process.

Here are my top tips for connecting to your pelvic floor:

  1. Stack Your Diaphragms: To leverage the relationship between the diaphragm and the pelvic floor, start by aligning them.
  2. Practice Breathing in Different Positions: Identify your personal areas of restricted breathing and practice diaphragmatic breathing in positions aimed at improving those areas. Most people have restrictions in their mid-back, so focusing on breathing here can be beneficial. Check out this video for an easy way to promote breath into the back: Click Here to Watch
  3. Sit on an Exercise Ball, Rolled Towel, or Foam Roller: These objects provide feedback to the brain. When you inhale, the pelvic floor descends onto these objects, aiding in awareness of this area. See this video and caption for more information: Click Here to Watch
  4. Personal Touch: Insert one finger or use a pelvic wand. These techniques help re-establish the mind-body connection, where tapping or light pressure on the muscles can help you understand their location and assist in contract-relax techniques. Understanding your anatomy is important. If it's not strange to touch a muscle in your arm or leg, it shouldn't be odd to feel a pelvic floor muscle. Approach these techniques with the right mindset, aiming to improve function.
  5. Be Patient: If you’re new to learning about your pelvic floor, consider how long you've lived without focusing on this area—30 years? Longer? Set realistic goals. Persistent effort using these techniques will eventually lead to your 'A-HA!' moment, and you won't look back!
